Ever wondered how opera and film are related, or why “Viva Verdi!” became a rallying cry for Italian pride? This winter, Dramaturg Jonathan Dean leads a survey of four centuries of history through the unique lens of opera.

In an 8-week online introductory course, we’ll listen to lots of opera and dive into what is involved in writing an opera libretto. (Libretto is an Italian word that means “little book,” and the person who writes the words to an opera is a librettist.) We will listen to opera and then we will write and examine the elements of the libretto. How is it different from a script? How is it different from a poem? How and when should a character sing an aria? In the final weeks of the course, a composer will set some of the lines that you write to music, so you hear how words and story work differently when we invite music to work its magic.
