What better way to introduce the next generation to the world of opera than firsthand through participation in Seattle Opera’s youth programs! This school year, youth participants will have two fun, exciting opportunities to sing and perform at the Opera Center beginning this fall with Youth Opera Chorus and continuing into the spring with Youth Opera 2022. No prior experience necessary and financial assistance is available.
Youth Opera Chorus – Fall 2021
Saturday, September 11–Saturday, November 20, 2021
This fall, singers ages 7–18 will have the chance to strengthen their vocal techniques and improve their music literacy while learning and performing some of the most well-loved youth opera choruses from operas like La bohème and Hansel and Gretel. Over the course of this 11-session program, participants will learn about the stories and cultures that these youth choruses originate from, take a crash course in Italian diction, and even get to meet an artist connected to Seattle Opera’s production of La bohème. But more importantly, Youth Opera Chorus provides young, developing voices with a chance to connect and sing with other kids who are as passionate about music and the arts as they are.
The safety of the youth in our community is our top priority. For all youth programs at Seattle Opera we are requiring health screenings and masks at all times. We have also reduced capacity for our programs to allow for a safer environment during rehearsals and performances. Seattle Opera staff are fully vaccinated or being COVID tested regularly. Our safety procedures may change in accordance to changing state and federal public health recommendations.
Youth Opera 2022
Up next! This January through April, youth performers will come together to learn, rehearse, and perform a fully-staged youth opera! Youth Opera participants will have the unique opportunity to experience what it’s like to be a member of an opera cast from the first music rehearsal to the final performance.
Registration will be available in late fall 2021. More information coming soon.
As part of our commitment to equity, Seattle Opera is dedicated to providing programs that are accessible to everyone in our community, regardless of financial standing. Fees for our youth programs are offered on a voluntary sliding scale, so that each family can choose the level that best fits their ability to pay. All participants receive the same instruction regardless of payment level. If none of these options work for you, please contact us to request financial assistance.
