Full Synopsis

Vienna in the 1740s

ACT I
After a night of lovemaking, the youthful Count Octavian and the Marschallin are disturbed by noises outside her bedchamber. The Marschallin fears her husband the Field Marshal has returned. Octavian dresses as a chambermaid, intending to slip out, but the intruder turns out to be the Marschallin's country cousin, Baron Ochs. Ochs asks for the Marschallin's aid in fulfilling an old custom: appointing a knight to deliver a silver rose to a nobleman's betrothed prior to their first meeting. Noting the Baron's lecherous interest in her "chambermaid" Mariandel, the Marschallin mischievously proposes Count Octavian as the rose bearer. The Marschallin dresses while a parade of claimants asks for her help. Alone, a nostalgic Marschallin ponders time's effects. When Octavian returns, the Marschallin says she foresees him leaving her for a younger woman.

ACT II
At his home, Herr von Faninal is ecstatic over Sophie's marriage into nobility. Octavian arrives and presents the rose to Sophie. Each is struck by the beauty of the other and entranced. As Faninal introduces the Baron to Sophie, Octavian rages inwardly at the Baron's boorish behavior. Faninal and the Baron withdraw, and Sophie tells Octavian she won't marry such a man. The two embrace, and the Baron returns to find them together. Octavian duels with him, wounding him slightly. Faninal placates Ochs with wine and food. Later, a note from Mariandel comes, requesting the Baron meet her at an inn outside of Vienna.

ACT III
Octavian plans an elaborate show at the inn to confuse and embarrass Ochs. Dressed again as Mariandel, he allows Ochs to try to seduce him. Alarmed by an apparition at the window, the Baron cries out, and the innkeeper and his staff come. Annina, previously plotting with Ochs but now in Octavian's employment, enters, claiming that the Baron is her husband and the father of the small children who are clustered around her. Outraged, the innkeeper sends for the police. The Baron maintains that Mariandel is his betrothed, Sophie, but his story collapses when Herr von Faninal arrives with Sophie, lured by a note from Octavian. The Marschallin unexpectedly arrives and sends the Baron away. Octavian, confronted with his former love and his new passion, doesn't know what to do; the Marschallin bids him to go to Sophie. The two lovers ecstatically celebrate their love.
