Waiting
Gabriella Garcia, librettist
Nehemiah Jones, composer
At the height of the American Chestnut Blight, a tree wakes from dormancy to find themselves quite alone and fearing the worst. They are relieved to find an elder chestnut who offers them the sense of community and companionship they were missing, but the great force, Wind, is determined to separate them.
The Meeting House
Raya Tuffaha, librettist
Carolyn Quick, composer
Fifteen years after the Salem Witch Trials, Temperance returns to the meeting house to grieve the loss of her childhood best friend. Upon entering, she's surprised to find her twelve-year-old self sitting in the pews, illuminated by moonlight. The confession begins.
Celestial Bodies
Ozzy Wagner, librettist
Max Mabry, composer
Approximately 900,000 miles from earth, an astronaut is confronted with their mortality—and themselves—when their trip is cut short by disaster.
Caccini’s Ghost
Grace Ward, librettist
Jeremy Berdin, composer
Giulio Caccini has been the Medici’s court composer for the last four decades, with the help of his ghostwriter daughter Francesca. When Francesca’s daughter, Margherita, decides to enter her own music for the Medici’s consideration, she unearths decades of trauma and deceit within her family tree. Caccini’s Ghost explores opera’s iconic Caccini family at their breaking point. Will they find a way to stick together and preserve their legacy, or is that very legacy poisoned at the roots?
About Creation Lab
Launched in 2020, the Jane Lang Davis Creation Lab presents new operas by local composers and librettists that tell diverse stories. Composers, songwriters, librettists, and lyricists of all genres are encouraged to apply to create new 20-minute operas that tell compelling, resonant stories through vocal music. Each opera undergoes a development process that includes a table reading, music workshop, and rehearsal prior to the public performance. The creators receive support from professional composers and librettists as they develop their work.
