Join us for an inspiring evening with Ilyasah Shabazz, daughter of civil rights icon Malcolm X, also known as Malik el-Shabazz. Reflect on the legacy of one of the most influential figures in history through the lens of his daughter’s unique perspective. Hear as she brings Malcolm X’s narrative to life, weaving together her personal insights behind his biography and underscoring the enduring power of his message. The talk will provide a rare opportunity to connect with history and be inspired to continue his work to resist oppression, challenge injustice, and fight for social and political equality.
Ilyasah ShabazzDaughter of Malcolm X, Professor & Author Ilyasah Shabazz is an award-winning author, educator, and producer. She has authored five historical novels, has served as project advisor for the PBS award-winning documentary Prince Among Slaves and is currently producing a television series based on her latest publication, The Awakening of Malcolm X, with Sony Pictures Television’s TriStar.
She is Chairperson of the Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center Board of Trustees. In her work to preserve the legacy of her parents, she has dedicated herself to institution-building and intergenerational leadership development with the tenants of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Dr. Shabazz has furthered her community impact with the City University of New York’s Office of Academic Affairs, where she created curriculum to encourage higher education for underserved, inner-city, and marginalized high school dropouts. She has worked with the Office of the Mayor in Mount Vernon as Director of Public Affairs & Special Events. She founded and produced a young adult development program to provide historical context on social justice, encouraging personal empowerment and community service as a way of life. As president and founder of Ilyasah Shabazz Enterprises, she produces a variety of forums dedicated to power, possibility, and sovereignty.
Dr. Shabazz is a member of the Soar Higher Cabinet Committee for SUNY New Paltz, the Advisory Council for the Equal Rights Amendment Coalition, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc; and she serves as a Trustee for the Harlem Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Shabazz holds a Master of Science in Education & Human Resource Development from Fordham University; a Bachelor of Science in Biology from SUNY New Paltz; and is an adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. In recognition of her outstanding achievements in Public Service, Education, and The Arts, Worcester State University conferred Ms. Shabazz with a degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. As the inaugural Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Fellow, Shabazz teaches the course, “We The People.” Grounded in the commitments of her parents, Dr. Shabazz emphasizes empowerment and inclusion in her teaching and scholarship.
TraeAnna Holiday, a true Seattleite, has watched her city change in many ways. From the age of nine, her deepest passion was in the creative field, which flourished at Garfield High School. She took that passion to Howard University, where she studied Theater Management in her first year of college. Later, through studying abroad multiple times at the University of Washington Tacoma, gaining her degree in Communications and Urban Studies, and being displaced by gentrification, she’s fueled to tell her neighborhood’s stories through film, advocacy, and education. She found ways to work on the solutions as an Emmy Award winning Media Personality, TV Show Host, and Producer with Converge Media, and an Ambassador with Africatown Community Land Trust. She’s become a strong voice for the amazing efforts at Africatown, helping to advocate for and spread their work throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond. On Converge, space is made to uplift community voices, brilliance, and news that is integral to how our community is shaped. Through her work as a Host and Producer on her daily talk show, The Day With Trae, and producing other content, she ensures the community has a platform to share their stories.
As the Director of Communications for Washington state’s Office of Equity, she leads a team to produce content that highlights the work being done in the office to embed pro-equity and anti-racism into state government, with an understanding of the need to be led by community voice and lived experience. She also uses her expertise toward other opportunities in media, speaking engagements, hosting and more. As a steward of community with a passion for storytelling, she brings her ideals to life and strives to help her family and others do the same.
This event is presented in partnership with the Northwest African American Museum and the King County Library System.
