Tosca

She lives for art and dies for love.

May 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 14, & 17, 2025
McCaw Hall

Overview

You’d have to call this opera production a definite touchdown.”

– The Seattle Times

Music by Giacomo Puccini
Libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa

Giacomo Puccini’s melodrama returns to the McCaw Hall stage in a classic production that “has just about everything: great tunes, desperate lovers, loads of action, and a bad guy you’re going to love to hate” (The Seattle Times). Two lovers are thwarted by the power-hungry Scarpia while the fiery prima donna Tosca is pushed past sanity when her only hope for freedom means submitting to the evil Baron’s lecherous desires.

“Vocally perfect” (Broadway World) soprano Vanessa Goikoetxea (Alcina ’23, Don Giovanni ’21, Carmen ’19) and the “gleaming soprano” (Opera Warhorses) of Lianna Haroutounian (Madame Butterfly ’17) return to McCaw Hall as Floria Tosca. As Cavaradossi, the “warm, rich tenor” (Bachtrack) of Rame Lahaj alternates with “ardent tenor and an impassioned actor” (The Seattle Times) Yonghoon Lee, who returns to Seattle after his debut as Samson (Samson and Delilah in Concert ’23).

Also available in a 2024/25 season package.

Ercole Sormani Scenography
Founded in Milan in 1838, the scenic studio created by Ercole Sormani created opera scenery for La Scala during the days of Verdi and Puccini and to this day upholds the grand tradition of representational scenic painting. Glynn Ross, Seattle Opera’s founding director, purchased these Tosca sets in the 1960s. Refurbished over the years by Seattle Opera Scenic Studios, they have often transformed our stage and that of many other American theaters into Napoleonic Rome.

She created and designed for several companies around town until the Seattle Opera created an in-house Hair and Makeup Designer position for her in 2017. During her time as the in-house Hair and Makeup Designer, she has built a sizable wig collection, built a department, and set high standards for wigs, hair and makeup. With each production, her designs are custom built for the performers and their characters to create a believable façade for the audience as well as complement the costumes and production as a whole.
